Due to the outbreak of the industrial revolution, capitalism increased the demand for cheaplabor and energy resources. Therefore, the British started the Opium War to China. Then,much more western advanced production methods came to China as the capitalism openedChina’s gate. The concept of “Design” has gradually been introduced and accepted as thereturn of the students of Westernization Movement. After the founding of the Republic of China,the ideas of innovative emerged continually. The outbreak of the “New Culture Movement” isan important turning point of the Chinese typography layout and book binding design, it can bedefined that it is a watershed of the “New” book design of modern China. Around the period ofthe “New Culture Movement”, the Chinese typography layout has been changedunprecedentedly in terms of the arrangement of types, punctuation, printing process, evenfolio size, kerning, line spacing and blank.What is the reason causing these changes? In this paper, the writer was tend to analyze theModern Chinese layout before the New Culture Movement, and research how the IndustrialRevolution lead to a change of the layout, typography and the book design, then to find out theinternal and external reasons which the “New Culture Movement” caused the Chinesetypography revolution. Furthermore, summarized and analyzed the outcome of the Chinesetypography layout which caused by the “New Culture Movement”, such as: the writing order,new punctuation, simplification and latinization of Chinese characters. Then came up withthe true reason of why the “New Culture Movement” lead to a significant influence to theChinese typography layout and book design, questioned these impacts and lead to arethinking of how we reserve and reject the traditional culture.
