With the industrialization and urbanization in China, the number of rural childrenleft behind became larger and larger, and this large group gradually aroused more andmore attention. At present, the number of rural children left behind is big, the scale islarge. However, in the next few years the number of rural children left behind willcontinue to grow. With the issue of migrant workers, the issue of children left behindbecomes a more serious social problem, and the various news reports of children leftbehind are also frequently appear in newspapers, television and Internet and othermedia. The report of News media, especially the mainstream media has a verysignificant impact for the promotion of settlement of this issue. In China,"Guangming Daily" and "China Youth Daily" are two representativemainstream medias and have considerable influence.Between2004and2009, thereports with the theme of children left behind in the two newspapers can reflect thecharacteristics of the length, number of words, layout, style, sources, the nature andthe content of the reports.Through the content analysis of the reports with the theme of children left behind in“Guangming Daily” and “China Youth Daily”, we can see that the agenda-setting ofthe left-behind children reports in the two newspapers not only has the samecharacteristics of neglected, distortion and bias, but also has some differences. At thesame time, the agenda-setting of the left-behind children reports in the twonewspapers also has some problems: First, the traces agenda-setting of the reports ofchildren left behind in our mainstream media is visible. To the reports of the childrenleft behind, the mainstream media do not have enough attention, the modelingphenomenon is very serous, and the majority of the reports is about the achievementsand the concludes of the work of government; Second, when the mainstream media tryto reproduce the image of the children left behind, there exists the stereotypes of"children left behind have the problems in character, psychology, education and soon" and " children left behind have difficult living conditions, they lack of the lovefrom family, they need care and help from the community"; Third, the media agenda, the public agenda and the policy agenda have mutual influence and interaction. Themedia agenda is mainly affected by the policy agenda, the policy agenda play aleading role and it is the leader and the decision in the absolute. In response to these problems, the mainstream media can be improved from thefollowing three aspects: First, abandon the thought of "re-light the public and payattention to the officials", highlighting the dominant position of children left behind;Second, the perspective of the reports to prone to civilian; Third, enrich the style ofreporting, expanding the content of the agenda.
