The term "Media Convergence" came into usage in the1990s when the internetstared be heard by normal families. It described television’s present and pointed toexpectations of its future. Because of the high Penetration and growth rate of internetin America, television industry faced challenges from new media early than othercountries, so American producers did lots of experiments for it. Even in digital time,audience will pay more attention on the content rather than the device. This thesisanalyzes how American TV production changes for facing the challenges from newmedia, based on actual examples and data:1. Television accepts and uses a great quantity of the material provided byaudience. Website like YouTube and Twitter blurs distinctions between producer andconsumer, and help generate "collective intelligence" communities.2. Television simulates the interaction of new media, created new programs. Thedisadvantage of television is lacking of the ability to interact with audience. But nowaudience could interact with reality shows by voting by internet or mobile phones.3. Convergence between media organizations cause old TV production modernchanged. News industry is the first field started media convergence. From contentcollection to news editing all appear new features.4. Technology, content and culture convergence. The future of television is moreconvergence. American government shows awareness of macro-control of mediaconvergence. At the same time, the part reflects convergence culture is increasing inTV programs, and gain more attention.In addition, this paper discusses how to improve Chinese television productionbased on the experience of American television. First, creates more new formats forthe new generation grew up in the mixed media age; develop new technology tosupport formats creativity; meanwhile encourage intensive production.
