Smart power IC chip is playing a more and more important role in the area of industrial automation, life medical appliances, automotive electronics, especially the modern military, aeronautics and astronautics and so on. Because of the special environment the chip lifetime and the performance stability become a new research. This text is about a design of protection circuit for protecting a single motor drive chip which is based on the process of120V BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS)、This single motor drive chip’s operating voltage is20V-80V, continuous working current is5A, quiescent current is less than25mA, typical power is3.2W, and it integrates LDMOS power tube, Bipolar, CMOS and other devices in a same chip. In order to make the chip and all motor drive get effective protection in extreme cases, the protection circuit must be provided with five functions of self protection and testing, which is under voltage protection, drive current limit, high temperature warning and protection, current sampling and short circuit protection. protecting circuit chip is not only to stabilize drive motor and other associated equipment but also to protect effectively the chip security and extend the service life. The research of protection circuit chip has very important significance for enhancing the quality of chips and perfecting the function of chips.This paper first introduces motor drive chip’s overall structure and work mode, and expounds the integrated circuit architecture of80V circuit drive chip in terms of the function to clear the function of submodule. After that, the paper especially introduces the way to make use of circuit simulation software Hspice to accomplish the function of protecting circuit and the method of utilizing the layout design software Virtuoso in Cadence to construct circuit entity.In the text, the protection circuit is divided into four parts, the drive current limiting circuit, high temperature warning and protection circuit, under voltage protection circuit and current sampling circuit. Circuit design, circuit layout drawing, the edition and the simulation process and result of the circuit functional validation script are elaborated in the paper. On the basis of theoretical analysis, the use of Synopsys’ Hspice simulation software circuit sub-modules and the overall circuit simulation theory functions, using the layout software Virtuoso of Cadence to design the layout, Finally delivered to the foundry tapeout, package.after finishing the DRC and LVS test with the Calibre of Mentor Graphics.
