This paper is derived from the "Low Cost, Low Power, High-reliability Embedded Terminals and Information Service Platform"(2010ZHZX1A1001), one of the Major Projects of Independent Innovation Achievements of Shandong Province, which is managed by Prof. Dongfeng Yuan form ISE of Shandong University.Thanks to the attention of the government departments at all levels, our province’s new rural construction has been rapid developed. Construction of new rural communities has been an important breakthrough of promoting the new rural construction, and promoting the new community informatization has become an important component of the new rural informatization. In the2006-2020"National Informatization Development Strategy", promoting community informatization was listed as one of China’s informatization development strategy. Demand of new information model and VOD service has been rising increasingly. Based on the current situation of informatization, our team has proposed a new information model which uses embedded Linux terminals and servers technology as the core and provides B/S service. Our purpose is using the embedded terminals to replace the PC, so all the services are provided by the servers which possess huge service ability.With comprehensive consideration of the application of new informatization models in new communities and the characteristics the new community users, this paper designed the VOD system based on the embedded Linux terminals, and achieved good demonstration application in Jining. Embedded terminals’hardware platforms apply the S3C6410chip as the processor, and the operating system uses the embedded Linux operating system. Through transplanting and modifying the browser source code based on WebKit and transplanting the mplayer source code, we can realize the streaming media playing using RTSP streaming protocol in B/S model.The VOD system components include embedded WebKit browser, WEB server, database server, embedded mplayer, stream media server and video storage server. The basic functions are as follows:the user registration and login module, streaming media list view and search module, damanding center, film comments module, video collection module and the management module. Community users can enjoy VOD service by logining on the VOD system using the embedded terminals and the administrator manages the VOD system through the managemant module.With the development of Internet technology, the VOD service has become a new information service technology in the field of network services. The VOD system for the new community informatization application has achieved the transformation from C/S model to B/S model, developped WEB-based online streaming service based on embedded Linux terminals, and provided real time demanding VOD platform for community users. The VOD system in this paper has been implemented in new community of Jining to complete of the demonstration application of the new information model, and achieved positive significance to promoting new community information process.
