ZigBee is a wireless network, is widely used in wireless sensor networks and wirelesspersonal area network. It’s network characteristics(highly reliable, cost-effective, able toachieve very low power, highly secure) make it become the world’s most concerned aboutin the wireless communication technology.In the20thcentury the internet build a major backbone for the earth, now it’s time forwireless sensor network to skin the earth in the21th.ZigBee network features make it theresearch hot spot in the wireless sensor network researching area and the first choice forwireless sensor network applications.There are several key research techniques of ZigBee’s applications for wireless sensornetwork, the network energy-saving method is one of them. This paper introduces ZigBeenetwork node types and network topology firstly, and then a little description of the ZigBeeprotocol stack with listing possible energy-saving method for each levels of the stack. Afterthat, analyse the current ZigBee routing strategy, at the end of analysis concluding the energyconsumption of routing strategy defects.Considering the possible stack energy-saving methods and ZigBee’s routing defects,based on the Highest connected Clustering Protocol which used in Ad hoc network, thepaper brings up a Highest connected Clustering Protocol that can be used in ZigBee network.After analysing the defects of the algorithm, by way of energy consumption classification ofEnd-Device, the paper brings up a load balancing clustering algorithm based on End-Device’senergy consumption classification. Making use of network clustering algorithm tomacro-control ZigBee network’s topology and making use of network local re-clustering tomicro-control ZigBee network’s topology. Finally, the paper brings up a routing strategy onthe foundation of network clustering. In this paper, by way of effective networkclustering—Highest connected Clustering Protocol and load balancing clustering algorithmbased on End-Device’s energy consumption classification and a routing strategy based onnetwork clustering, achieve the network energy-saving finally.At the end of the paper, using the OPNET network simulation, simulate the energy-saving method presented in this paper, the results of simulation show that the method can reduce theoverall network’s energy consumption and extend the lifecycle of ZigBee networkeffectively.
