With the advancement of sensor technology, micro-electromechanical systems, networks and wireless communication and other technology, wireless sensor networks emerge and develop in recent years. As sensor networks have less restriction than internet, wireless sensor networks are widely used in commerce, military, environment monitor, and medical care etc. AS a new research area in modern communication technology, there are many research achievement on this subject. There are thousands and thousands of sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks, all these sensor nodes have limited power. How to efficiently use the power is a very important issue. In this paper, we first introduce the architecture and network protocol of wireless sensor networks, and then we compare many typical routing protocols, We focus on the study of LEACH algorithm. The improvements of this routing protocol is introduced. Based on this, we implement a new LEACH combined Energy and Time (LEACH-CET) algorithm. In this new algorithm, if there is any cluster head in certain scope, the nodes with more energy become cluster head first. Compared with previous algorithm, the result of cluster head selection is more steady and uniform. A tree-like structure is established among cluster heads. The data in cluster head is transmitted along this structure. So the distance among cluster heads are shortened. Many improved algorithm of LEACH is simulated, the performance of these protocol are compared. We analysis the feature of all theses algorithms. Finally, We simulated our algorithm and a comparison with previous improved LEACH algorithm is provided. Our new algorithm can provide a good balance on the consume of energy among sensor nodes, and thus this algorithm can prolong effect communication time for sensor networks.
