With the development of technology of network communication and Multimedia, Embedded video monitoring system steps into the new period of completely digital network application, which exactly means a developing direction to the fields such as telecommunication, bank, traffic utilization electronic power and intelligent building. In light of the seriousness of the phenomenon of China’s bicycle stolen, this paper implements an ARM-based embedded video monitoring system. Comparing to traditional multimedia surveillance system, this scheme has the characteristics of small volume, low cost, high stability and etc, therefore, it has good applied and development outlook. The design of hardware system and the development of software system are mainly discussed in this thesis.With regards to the hardware design, the embedded video capture system is consist of USB camera and S3C2410as its CPU, and as it connects to PC through GPRS, the system of video inspecting can work well. USB camera selection ZC0301P of DSP chips; Ethernet controllers use RTL8019AS; ARM9processor S3C2410use this development board. It is the Samsung primarily for cost-effective, low-power applications is designed, its rich resources, is very suitable for the development of this system. Concrete realization of the process as follows:video signals from the USB camera capture, through the JPEG encoding then by the GPRS interface to send to the network for video transmission, and finally displayed on the terminal PC machine.Because it has excellent kernel design and application performance, Linux is running on many kinds of hardware. Linux also owns other merits, such as its free source code, its inherit networking functions and its modularization design in kernel. Therefore Linux is very suitable to be the operating system of embedded system. After comparing various embedded operating system, we select Linux.As far as the software design, the system software and the internet applications must be designed. First we must port the Boot Loader and embedded Linux kernel to the target of ARM Platform. Then, a system of video capturing need to be designed to run on the Platform of ARM. Monitoring the process of communication software design, monitoring center management software design of three parts.Finally, this thesis summarized the completed works, and the method of future improves has been given too.
