In last several years, great progress has been made in wireless communication area. Now, the wireless communication techonology have been widely adopted by many military and civil fiels. VHF radio as the key communication equipment in the filed has been inducted to almost all armed services in the world. As the thesis for Master of Engineering, the most important part is to develop a new product with all the therical technologies learning from Universities. The aim of this thesis is to develop a specific VHF radio with the Ad Hoc function. This VHF raido will work as the core communication equipment in the tactical level communication network which have the capability of self-healing, self-organizing, and high-mobile features. With all these advanced features, the communication efficiency in the battlefield will be dramatically improved. The author of this thesis is mainly responsible for the anaylizing, evaluating, and give the suggestion for selctiong of routing protocol in this VHF radio. In this theis, first the operating principle of VHF radio including its networking performance during the hopping mode was described. Then, the author provide some limitations of existing VHF radio during the networking status especially when operating in the mountains, jungles, and etc. Subsequently, the author analyze the basic theory and routing protocols of the Ad Hoc self-healing network. The author also conducted analysis of advantage and shortcomings of general routing protocols. At the same time the author also conduct detailed study on MIL-STD-188-220C and proposed his own mode to resolve the routing issues. Moreover, the detailed algorithm was also presented for reference. After the simulation and field test, the performance results also show that our MIL-STD-188-220C routing protocol over the 802.11b testbed is feasible for both unicast andmulticast applications of multihop as well as mobile Ad Hoc networks. Finally, the author gave a detailed introduction of each module of PKR-1 VHF radio and its R&D process. Regarding networking part, the simuation of most popular routing protocols like AODV, DSR, DSDV and the one adopted by DoD, US MIL-STD-188-220C have been conducted through the network simulation software NS2. After successful simulation, the networking suggestions for PKR-1 VHF Radio have been given.
