MPLS (multiprotocol label switching) is a new network technology addressing broadband Internet. In order to solve the problems faced to IP backbone network now, IETF put forward the notion of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). This paper shows the history of MPLS, and provides a compendious description about network architecture, basic concept and operational principle of MPLS, then gives comparison between MPLS and traditional tag switching, and points out the technique of ATM and MPLS.As the whole world is heading for the information society, telecommunication services are becoming more and more important and indispensable and then faults in telecom networks will bring us inestimable damage. In addition, with the evolution from the present telecom networks to B-ISDN, the network existence problem in B-ISDN becomes the focus of attention. In the case of any unavoidable optic fiber link cut or network node becoming ineffective, broadband network can quickly and effectively bring the traffic to another change route, thus reducing the damage to the minimum. This paper presents self-healing (and some relevant concepts), the most essential control technology in the existence strategies of broadband network and emphasizes self-healing technology on MPLS and how to use it in actural work.In the end,The paper prospects the development of the self-healing technology on MPLS,and states it will play an important role in NGN.
