The inaugural editorial is an article published in an inaugural issue when a magazine or newspaper in the first publication. Generally, it contains the magazine’s principle, target, policy, contents of the magazine and the orientation of readers. Also it contains the typesetting and related matters about the magazine and so on. Readers can initially decide whether the magazine is readable or not. Although, the inaugural editorial is an important text, it has been neglected by us. People seldom analyses the inaugural editorials.This paper selects the inaugural editorials since 1976 and analyses them by narratology. The paper consists of three sections, the carding of the text type, the narrative analysis of the text and the characteristics of narrative contents. In the first part, the types of all inaugurals are divided into three kinds, two core types and a group of marginal types. And in this part characteristics of all types of inaugurals are also discussed. In the second part, the paper analyses the narrative structure, the narrative strategy and the narrative style of inaugural editorials. In the third part, the paper respectively evaluates characteristics of narrative contents from three aspects:obvious times feature, attention of "Four Modernizations" and ignorance of political reform, excessively emphasis on celebrity.The innovation of this paper, on one hand, is the novel topic, on the other hand, is the use of narratology, which may be useful to theoretical study and practice research of inaugural editorial.
