Narratology Study Of The Column Contemporary Pioneers

In the West over the past more than 40 years, narratology of several schools has expanded to all kinds of narration from literature in research scope. Although starting late, narrative analyses on news report in China have recently got into a heat with the development of narratology study. In China narrative analyses on news text centers on studies on narrator, narrative perspective and structure, and some scholars only focus on narrative structure of a certain news type.Contemporary Pioneers is a figure column launched by People's Daily in 2005 with participation of other central and local media. Studies on Contemporary Pioneers, a typical example of present profile of advanced people, can reflect narrative characteristics of profile writing, which is positive to deepen and expand research on journalistic narratology.Genette divides narration into three layers: story, narrative/text and narrating. Based on Genette's theory, this thesis attempts to study narrative content, text's physical structure and the way to organize text in Contemporary Pioneers, and to sum up characteristics of profile writing.In Part One of the thesis' main body, studies of the character of profile actually are studies of narrative content, i.e. the story called by Genette. Although the characters of narration are advanced people in Contemporary Pioneers, people's profiles are set up by their deeds. So eventually studies of people are studies of what they do, i.e. the story. However, due to those trivialities, people's deeds should be selectively narrated in ways of stereotype, reserve and replacement of archetype. Mainstream ideology results in the two ways that in return influence mainstream ideology. That's to say, on the one hand, mainstream ideology demands that journalistic narration comply with the guideline so that the profiles of advanced people become stereotyped; on the other hand, the ingrained stereotype makes people more recognize the stereotype itself, and consequently mainstream ideology is reinforced.In terms of narratology, profile narration has its own organizing formula in some way. The scheme of Contemporary Pioneers consists of titles and plot. Titles characterize full information, parataxis, frequently used subtitles, all kinds of styles, which lead different communicative effect. Plots consist of main events in different organization and background of inadequate information.Part Three is about narrator and narrative perspective of Contemporary Pioneers, and Part Four argues its narrative time. Narrator, narrative perspective and narrative time are all regarded as narrating. In Contemporary Pioneers, it's common to see that narrator narrates covertly to make narration objective. When a journalist narrates open, he/she is usually mentioned as I or the journalist to enhance the presence effect. Sorts of perspectives in different combination and transformation are adopted in narration and different sequence, duration and frequency reconstruct the text's narrative time.
