In recent years, as the requirement for high quality of watermelon seeds increases, it’s important to sort the seeds before frying. It’s difficult to sort the seeds of watermelon because of its flat granule with irregular shape and nonuniform colours. With the enlarged production, the inefficient manual sorting cannot meet the needs of requirements. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the efficiency and precision rate of sorting by using the equipment of Computer Vision control.According to reports, most of the early color separator are photoelectric sorting, having low separation efficiency and accuracy. In recent years, the developing charge coupling components CCD (Charge Coupled Device) color separators become the mainstream in the melon seeds sorting machines.The study makes a detailed test research in CCD color separator system, introducing the gray scale identification algorithms in watermelon seeds sorting, designing the CCD detection system hardware,which take FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) as parallelling hardware computing program and integrates CCD driver, dynamic image acquisition and processing algorithms, classification algorithm and valve control signal output in one FPGA,researching how to use the FPGA to drive and collocate CCD chip and modulus transition chip in software research area.As to the design of multi-channel real-time sorting, this study guarantee the executable in algorithm. The sorting algorithm uses contrast adaptive histogram equalization and gray image enhancement with ratio statistic method, transplanting into the CCD grains color separator with the FPGA as its core.This study compared and tested the CCD color sorter and the traditional Industrial Personal Computer processing platform. The results showed that the detection system based on FPGA platform is of great real-time capability and high efficiency. The study provides theoretical and technical support for the design of CCD sorter for watermelon seeds based on FPGA.
