Low volta ge (L V) Power Line Comm unication (PL C) referred to the technologies, applications and related devices, which used the traditional low electric distribution network to provide the comm unication services, and transm it data and voice signal. L V PLC has been widely us ed in Inte rnet a ccess, sm art hom e and Automatic Meter Read ing (AMR) system b ecause of its unparalleled advantages compared with other communication access technologies.In this paper, in order to construct a reliable communication platform for smart home with power lines (PLs), the AMR wa s chosen as a breakthrough point, and a new solution to the management and supervision of the electricity consumption in the communities and factories was proposed. In this sch eme, the PLs were used to construct the in-hom e Ethernet, which wa s connected to the Inte rnet via hom e gateway, then to access or control the home appliances from the Internet are available.The in-home Ethernet can be divided in to three modules acc ording to function, one is the hom e gateway connecting the Et hernet and Internet ; the control m odule directly communicate with the watt-hour m eter or home appliances; the Remote Server (RS, or Remote Terminal Unit, RTU) sends the commands and stores the data. The paper discusses th e arch itecture of th e system , the function of RS, software developing of the RS and the design of the communication protocols between the RS and the control module.According to the functions and perfor mance of the system , I had designed the networking protocols in order to achieve the reliable data transm ission between th e RS and control module. The Socket Client sent the commands to the control m odule, which could parse the comm ands and send it to the sm art meter or home appliances; meanwhile, the da ta came from the contro l module will be processed and stored by the RS. Through the construction of the in-home Ethernet, we realized the simple data transmission and the control of the devices and tested the feasibility of using the PLs in smart home; meanwhile, the development of the protocol based on the function of the system assured the reliable data transmission under bad channel conditions.
