New Weekly,which organized by the Administration of Press and Publication ofGuangdong Province, is known as the first magazine consciously dedicated todiscovering the city, construct a unique urban narrative with innovative, stylishwriting.The main question of this paper is about what function the New Weekly plays inthe process of construction of the cultural space of the present city, whatcharacteristics the urban culture of China show since the late1990s, what areas thechanges occurred in, and what impact on people’s emotional expression, habits ofmind, spiritual structure, etc. The New Weekly witness the development of modernurban culture of China, and we can feel the tension of the culture of the New Weeklyfrom the context of modern urban culture, examine the interactive mode between theNew Weekly and modern urban culture of China under the discourse framework of themass media and social change.New Weekly is a product of the times,and also important witness and participantto contemporary urban fashion imagine, which tells the story of people in the cityNeon light, collages colorful urban landscape, stimulates the public’s desire forwealth, taste, fashion life, influences the selection and use of the dissemination ofinformation of the audience, provides paradigm of imagination and imitation for themiddle-class public, in order to achieve the business structure of the media space ofurban lifestyle. The fashion imagination of the New Weekly, not just simply a culturalphenomenon and urban cultural landscape, but more profoundly reflects the dramaticchanges in cultural trends and social values in the contemporary process ofurbanization.
