Adverbs with reduplicated syllables "AA", a special sort of Modern Chinese adverbs,are difficult to acquire for students who learn Chinese as their second language. Based onthe corpus of the Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU, this thesis aims to study objectively37common "AA" adverbs in diverse perspectives according to the Three Levels theorynamely semantic, syntactic and pragmatic describing and analyzing.This thesis is divided into six parts. Chapter One, Introduction, reviews the recentsituation of related research, addresses the reasons of topic selection, presents the aim andthe meaning of this thesis, introduces the theoretical principle, research methods, the originof example sentences and arrangement of the content.Chapter Two, analyzes the property, scope and classification of the adverbs withreduplicated syllables "AA", defines the object of this research is37common "AA" adverbs.Chapter Three, describes and analyzes37common "AA" adverbs on the semantic level.It includes sememe analysis, scalar semantic category, semantic orientation analysis andsynonymic semantic field.Chapter Four, describes and analyzes37common "AA" adverbs on the syntactic level.It includes the syntactic function and position, the distribution in both positive and negativesentences, and the rhythm limit.Chapter Five, describes and analyzes37common "AA" adverbs on the pragmatic level.It includes the distribution in different Chinese styles, mood expressions, delineativemeanings, pragmatic presupposition function and focus selecting function.Chapter Six, summarizes the research and gives advices on teaching Chinese as thesecond language based on the features of the three levels of common "AA" adverbs, pointsout the limitation of this research and outlines the further study in the future.Through such a mid-scale study, we find a bunch of features in common "AA" adverbs.On the semantic level, most of these adverbs have only one sememe which often hasinitiative factors and inheritable features. About43%of them obviously have typicalmeanings of a scalar semantic category which usually express "subjective great amount" onthe right axis. About68%point to their following parts which are often predicates ofsentences. Especially, common descriptive "AA" adverbs tend to point at the precedingsubject while the commentary and limit ones incline to point at the succeeding predicates.On the syntactic level, they are mainly used as adverbials. Some could be used as attributeseven predicates. They usually appear in the middle of sentences, at specific relative positionsto negative adverbs,"Ba" structures and "Bei" structures. Some also emerge at the beginningsentences and could be classified into two categories by the accompanying parts. Most scalarand descriptive "AA" adverbs, and some frequency "AA" adverbs are likely to appear inpositive sentences, however, the commentary adverb "Wanwan" and time adverb "Chichi"usually exist in negative sentences. They are always likely to be combined with two-syllablewords even though some are able to be combined with one-syllable words, and some evenmerely match two-syllable words. According to whether the structural particle "Di" has tosucceed or not, they could be split into two categories: free type and limited type. On thepragmatic level, they are easier found in spoken Chinese, but some are also very popular in decrescendo type, instead of traditional viewpoint that the mood expression of reduplicatedadverbs is stronger than that of the original. Parts of them, particularly the descriptive "AA"adverbs are rich of delineative meanings. Besides "Baibai","Chichi" and "Pianpian" alsohave presupposition function.This mid-scale study on37common "AA" adverbs has reconciled the differences of thestandard and scope issue among former research as it scientifically defines its research scopeby "AA" adverbs’ frequency of occurrences in the corpus and analyzes the property ofresearch objects through comparing them to other confusing words. The study obtains muchmore findings which could enrich the existing research achievements about this kind ofadverbs of Chinese for it focuses on revealing the inner semantic, syntactic and pragmaticfeatures of "AA" adverbs from diverse perspectives with various methods such ascomparative analysis, transformation etc, avoiding simply compare between the reduplicatedand the original. The study meets urgent needs from the field of teaching Chinese as thesecond language, such as the compiling of textbooks and dictionaries, and the preparation oflessons about these adverbs since it pays attention to collect the general as well as specificfeatures of "AA" adverbs and displays the features in tabular form when possible.
