This paper is based on the theme "green design ethics". The idea is highlighted through the unique point of view of the self-conscious responsibility of architects. This is further emphasized through analyzing the Australian award winner of the2002Pritzker Prize, Glenn Murcutt’s design career and his representative works "life building". This will go into depth in discussing the problems of designing green architectures in the low-carbon era.The paper introduces with a brief description of the basic concepts and the development of the world’s green design ethics since the last century. The word "ethics" represent the relationships between human and human, and human and nature; furthermore, it acts as the rules for dealing with these relationships."Design ethics", asks one to focus on long-term interests and to achieve a balance and coordination between human, environment and resources. The so-called "building design ethics" requires the architect to be aware of the responsibility of the profession for both their clients and the society. The word "green", in a modern sense, is a form of attitude:an introspection of western industrial civilization, the return to the thought of man and nature become one in china."Green design" symbolizes the environmental attributes of the designed product throughout its entire life cycle; the focuses of the designs are to achieve removability, recyclability, maintainability, and reusability. The phrase "green design ethics of architecture" means that architects are not only responsible to the society, but also the nature. They are not only taking the responsibility for the present, but for the future as well.--within the life cycle of the building, reduce the energy and resources consumed and minimize the negative consequences on environment; to guide the future to a reasonable lifestyle, one that "is responsible for the actions of the past"This paper combines Australian architect Glenn Murcutt’s designs and techniques to illustrate the great impact he has on the20th century green design ethics and development. The analysis of Glenn Murcutt’s "live building" will show his importance and the significance of his live building architecture for the green design ethics within this modern low-carbon architecture era. "Live building architecture" is what this author label as Murcutt’s representable works of design. It shows Murcutt’s pursuit of the green design ethics and his successful practices. It is a building that respects its location and the environment, just like a living entity, it can self-adjust its relationship with nature."Live building architecture" self-adjusts its relationship with nature by adopting and using elements such as wind, light and water."Live building architecture" is made from six elements and features, straight line body, light bones, elastic muscle, breathing skin, light hair and exquisite joints. This paper will interpret in depth the "elements" and "methods of generation" of these buildings. The results from analyzing Glenn Murcutt’s "live building architecture" green designs showed that he:followed rational principle of philosophy, utilized functional and modern techniques, used materials suitable for the environment and made sure the architecture space was reasonable. The architectures had limits but he carried his design to a whole new level, an unlimited nature environment. This made him extraordinary, setting a meaningful example for the rest of the world and have the value of imitation. The author hopes Chinese architects can get some inspiration from Glenn Murcutt and his "live building architecture", and like Glenn Murcutt, to take the responsibility of green low-carbon architecture within this ordinary era. Architects will eventually find a profound wisdom through native architecture and combining it with the most developed architecture technique and materials to design the future green low-carbon architectures for the china property.
