A Translation Project Report Of Community Interpreting (ChaperⅡ)

This report is based on the translation of the second chapter of an academicmonograph Community Interpreting. The translated chapter is about10,000words andthe title of which is “interpreting in medical settings”. This monograph is written byProfessor Sandra Beatriz Hale form the University of Western Sydney, who is apioneer in the study of community interpreting. This book is published by PalgraveMacmillan in2009and there has been no Chinese edition so far.Community interpreting is an important part of interpreting and has a longhistory in western countries. It dates back to the16thcentury in Spain. Today itbecomes an active cross-cultural communication activity. However, a complete andsound community interpreting service system has not been built up in China so far, letalong the studies in community interpreting, which is much less than the studies infields like conference interpreting. The author selects this monograph to translate,aiming to promote the studies in community interpreting in China. The sectiontranslated is about medical settings, which is the main part of community interpreting.It contains some professional knowledge about medicine and is closely linked to dailylife. Hence, this report is of great practical and academic significance.As a translation report, it aims to study the translation of academic monograph.It belongs to non-literary translation while has its own features. As we all know,monographs are rigid, professional and are full of long sentences with strong logics.All these features make the translation work more complicated. The translated sectionin this report is in the domain of both interpreting and medical care. The translation ofacademic monographs plays an important role in academic communication and study.However, there are a lot of deficiencies in it and even no established standards. Therefore, under the guidance of the theory of functional equivalence, this reportprobes into the translation of academic monographs and talks about the focal anddifficult points. The author tries to sum up the experience and lessons, so that it canoffer some suggestions in this kind of translation subject.
