As a major artistic form in the mechanical reproduction period, the film has the function of spreading culture and arts. Movies adapted from literary works, which express these literary works with the movie language, have provided a new method to interpret literature. The conciseness and uncertainty in literary works and the vacillation between the lines all offer opportunities of adaption. Such movies as are adapted from literary works hold out a new criticism pattern for people’s reading experience, and open a new filed for literary interpretation.The literary works of Eileen Chang have been hot themes for film adaptation. Movies adapted from her works intensively demonstrate what traditional text research fail to touch upon in terms of plot deletion and addition, scene setting, picture and color, musical style, aesthetic taste and so on.Depiction of family and nation, a sense of history, a sense of tragedy, the completeness of her characters to fight against fate, the oriental delicacy and poetical feeling revealed in her works are all directly or indirectly expressed in the movies.The two movies Love in A Fallen City and Half Life Fate clearly reflec Eileen Chang’s sense of history and her attitude toward the development of human civilization. Her concern for the development of human civilization revealed between the lines of her literary works is enlarged and shown in the movies. Eileen Chang said that her characters were all imperfect persons who intrigued against each other for their small businesses. Movies adapted from Eileen Chang’s works, such as Half Life Fate, Self-Pity Women, Red Rose and White Rose, and Lust Caution, express the characters’ degeneration, salvation and tragic fate, which are very similar to Greek tragedy in that both show the completeness of their characters. The poetical feeling and daily life aesthetic standard unique to Chinese classic novels are hidden in Eileen Chang’s novels. The movies Half Life Fate, Red Rose and White Rose, Flowers in Shanghai and Lust Caution mine these hidden features through film scenes, plots, themes, and aesthetic taste, and prove the poetic existence of Eileen Chang’s novels.
