In the context of global economic integration and modern information & communication technology, China has recognized its strategic needs to spread the Chinese language and culture to the rest of world with its rapid economic development and increasing influence in the international area. Many countries around the world, for a long time, regarded the spread of their national languages as an important strategic measure for economic development and cultural exchanges. Some language and cultural organizations, for example, Alliance Francaise and Goethe Institute, have achieved a success in communicating their native languages and cultures, which deserve policy makers and practitioners for the overseas promotion of Chinese to learn from. This paper attempts to analyze the experiences of Alliance Francaise in its overseas development, discuss the status quo and problems of teaching Chinese abroad, in particular those of the Confucius Institutes, and ultimately propose recommendations on the development pattern, pedagogical methods, textbook development, trainer cultivation and school facilities for teaching Chinese overseas.
