An Analysis Of Social Work Intervention Into Families With Cleft Lip And Palate Children

Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital diseases of human beings. Families with cleft lip and palate children face many psychological and social needs in the process of children growing up. As a professional to help others, social work can use specialized methods and techniques to involve in this group, helping them to better adapting to the society, and creating a good social environment for children’s growth. This study is based on the activities of New Life program-Shandong team. The theme is social work service intervention into the families of children with cleft lip and palate. By analysis, the current study of cleft lip and palate are rarely from the perspective of social work intervention.With the method of literature, I collected all the interdisciplinary research data of cleft lip and palate both at home and abroad. At the same time, using the method of depth interview, which is one of the qualitative research methods. I interviewed the parents of cleft lip and palate, community residents, the government related department staff, college social work volunteers and other related groups.Based on the collected data, I made a conceptualization from the interview data extraction, and analysis the family’s pressure source, social support network, function and methods of social work intervention. Research finds that, family pressure sources come mainly from three aspects:from children with cleft lip and palate, from parents themselves and from society. Social support network are mainly member of the family, school, society, institutions and government, etc.From the micro and macro aspects, the article analyzed the function of social work intervention of cleft lip and palate. From the micro level, for cleft lip and palate family, medical social work intervention in cleft lip and palate family can relieve parents’ psychological stress, enhance parents’confidence and eliminate the negative emotions and promote harmonious parent-child relationship; it also can promote the social atmosphere without discrimination and to establish peer support network. From the macroscopic side, medical social workers can promote the government policy; promote community outreach and advocacy, eliminate discrimination; Ease the doctor-patient relationship and enhance the public image of the hospital; it can also promote medical social work professional education and the construction and development of related systems. In addition, from the perspective of social work intervention, the article also analyzed the methods and strategies.Ultimately, from micro and macro point of view, the article put forward some countermeasures and suggestions. This study not only made up for the deficiency of social work intervention studies in cleft lip and palate, but also have provided certain theory reference basis frontline social workers, providing effective references for better service in cleft lip and palate family social work.
