Objective:The aim was to explore the role of impulsiveness, resilience, hypomania and fantasy proneness in creativity for undergraduate nursing students in China. Methods:A questionnaire survey was carried out in490undergraduate nursing students in China. Creativity was measured by Creativity Assessment Packet (CAP), impulsiveness by Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), resilience by the10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC10), hypomanic personality by the Hypomanic Personality Scale (Hyp) and fantasy proneness by the Creative Experience Questionnaire (CEQ). The Statistic Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS version17.0) was used for analyses. Demographic variables were analyzed using descriptive statics. Two-tailed Pearson correlations and one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were used to examine the relationship between creativity and demographic and other factors. Predictors of creativity were evaluated using a hierarchical regression analysis, with order of entry of variables.Results:1. Undergraduate nursing students have some degree of creativity, with a mean CAP total score of M=106.93, SD=11.55, range=76-140. The mean score of the four factors were23.52+2.92,30.43+3.99,25.72+3.87,27.26+3.05, respectively.2. One-way ANOVAs revealed significant differences in creativity and factors (except factor of adventure) based on demographic variables such as sex and class leader vs general students (P<0.05, P<0.01).3.The correlation analysis showed that there were significantly negative relations between creativity and impulsiveness and No-planning factor in CAP (r=-0.106and-0.252, respectively, all P<0.05).4. Creativity and the four factors were significantly and positively related to resilience, hypomanic personality and fantasy proneness, respectively (r=0.184-0.397, all P<0.01).5. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that23.9%variance of creativity was explained by impulsiveness, resilience, hypomanic personality and fantasy proneness. Furthermore, the degree of impulsiveness has an obvious negatively predictable function to creativity.Conclusions:1. The level of creativity in the undergraduate nursing students was underperformed the norm group.2. There were significantly differences in sex of the underground nursing students. Students who were class leader have lower level of creativity.3. The impulsive students have lower level of creativity; whereas students with higher resilience, hypomanic personality and fantasy proneness are more creativity.4. Factors, such as resilience, hypomanic personality and fantasy proneness all have obvious positively predictable function to creativity, while No-planning factor of impulsiveness negatively predicted creativity.
