Objective:This study was designed to test the subjects by the level of serum homocysteine (Hcy), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), and carotid intima-media thickness, to explore the role of level Serum Hcy the MIF on carotid atherosclerosis; to study the correlation between level of serum Hcy and MIF, to investigate whether the Hcy contribute to carotid atherosclerosis formation by MIF. The results will provide a new theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.Method:1. Inpatients and outpatients were recruited in Department of Neurology, the Affiliated Lianyungang Hospital of Bengbu Medical College from December2011to August2012. All of the patients were accordance to the inclusion and exclusion criteria.2. Detection targets:Detection of the vascular anatomic form, the circumstance of endomembrane, with or without plaque, luminal stenosis or not and the degree of stenosis by color Doppler imaging, measurement of the carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), according to the results of color Doppler ultrasound, which divided into normal group (control group), carotid atherosclerosis group; Determination of serum Hcy levels by Chemiluminescence, determination of serum MIF levels by ELISA, meanwhile detection of all subjects states such as total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), blood sugar, liver and renal function, record of the age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, drinking and so on.3. Data analysis:The general clinical characteristics of patients, Hcy, MIF and so on by univariate analysis, χ2test used for count data,t-test used for measurement data has been tested and obey the homogeneity of variance; after the univariate analysis if any related factors by Logistic regression analysis; simple correlation analysis used for the correlation among Hcy, MIF and IMT, to calculate the correlation coefficient.P<0.05was considered statistically significant. Results:1. The total of159patients conform the standard, including96cases of male (60.38%) and63cases of females (39.62%), range of age from45to76years, mean age61.43±7.47years.100cases of Carotid atherosclerosis,59cases of normal group.2, The result of single factor analysis showed that:hypertension, diabetes, Hcy, MIF, TC and LDL-C are likely to be carotid atherosclerosis risk factors (P<0.05), HDL-C may be the protective factors of carotid atherosclerosis (P<0.05).3. The result of multivariate factor analysis demonstrated that:hypertension, diabetes, Hcy, MIF, LDL-C and TC are independent risk factors for carotid atherosclerosis, OR (OR95%CI), respectively:8.014(1.613,39.824),8.097(1.865,35.148),1.240(1.026,1.499),1.072(1.011,1.138),1.784(1.017,3.128),3.306(1.150,9.503), both P<0.05.4. The simple correlation analysis among Hcy, MIF and IMT showed:serum Hcy, MIF levels and IMT correlation coefficient r=0.558,0.604(P<0.05), serum Hcy levels and serum MIF levels correlation coefficient r=0.586(P<0.05).Conclusion:1. hypertension, diabetes, LDL-C and TC are independent risk of carotid atherosclerosis.2. The level of serum Hcy and MIF showed positively correlate with carotid IMT, serum Hcy and MIF may be the important independent risk factors of carotid atherosclerotic.3. The level of Serum Hcy and serum MIF showed positively correlation, suggesting that Hcy may promote the formation of atherosclerosis by MIF. Control the levels of Hcy,MIF may become a new target for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.
