In the recent years, the increasingly tense doctor-patient relationship is exerting severeimpact on hospitals, the once sacred palace of humanity. A huge trust crisis has been triggeredbetween doctors and patients due to the unsatisfactory performance in the medical reform andlagging in mitigating difficulties and high cost of seeking medical service, which incurredstressed relationship between doctors and patients. The frequent occurrence of medicaldisputes and their expanding influence have aroused extensive public concern. Thisphenomenon not only undermines the images of medical staff, but also endangers thediscipline and quality of medical service, which will eventually threaten tangible benefits ofpatients. The growing tension between patients and doctors has always been a sensitive topicof common interest both for medical staff and patients, attracting great attention from healthcommunity, legal profession and the media. Medical disputes have evolved into a social issueinstead of merely a medical issue.As a Grade-A tertiary hospital in a better developed region in China, Guangdong GeneralHospital ranks among one of the largest general hospitals nationally. It is of particularsignificance to tackle doctor-patient relationship whose appropriate settlement and thedevelopment of a harmonious medical environment constitutes the key to sustainabledevelopment of the hospital. Meanwhile, as Guangdong is at the forefront of pilot projects ofthe medical reform of China, research in this field can serve as a referential model to othermedical institutions nationwide.Based on the working experience of the author, and from the perspective of publicadministration, this paper specifically focuses on the actualities of China, especially that ofGuangdong General hospital, and puts forward concrete measures to improve doctor-patientrelationship from the aspects of hospital management, medical quality and introduction ofthird-party mediation, by means of in-depth study into the status quo of Guangdong GeneralHospital and learning from leading experiences of developed countries. It intends to buildharmonious relationship between doctors and patients in hopes of influencing other medicalinstitutes in China.
