Between late19th century and mid-20th century, large amount of alleys which were embedded in the old Hankou concession district and weaved the old urban road network, have severed the city as passageways between major roads and "Lifen" residential apartment areas. With the change of time and the ownership of the "lifen" historical residential areas, alleys do not only sever the city solely as the passageways, but also were attributed with more functions and significance. By studying the space in the alleys, we can better understand interrelation and characteristics of the urban materialized space and daily lives of the local residents and their public social relationship. And based on this study, we can provide more solid reference for upgrading the residential areas within the old concession district and better design strategy for modern residential area design and construction. This study includes three phases. Investigation and analysis:the first phase focuses on the history and current situation of the alleys within old concession district. By categorizing alleys, we can understand the space characteristics of different alleys; we selected the most representative concession district-the historical British concession in the second phase of the study, and described the alley space, its development and characteristics in detail. Furthermore, we categorized the various alleys space and described them within the British concession district. In phase three of the study, three intact and historically significant "lifen" residential areas were selected, and a thorough investigation was conducted, which focused on the history of the alley space, current situation, surrounding environment and residential activities.Through these three procedures of research and analysis, summed up that despite the transportation function the alleys have other features as below:public space in the neighborhood, defensible function, employment for residents, creating harmonious social atmosphere.
