A Study On Urban Morphology Transformation And The Space Analyzation Of Tianjin Former British Concession

The former British Concession was the first concession built by the foreigners in Tianjin. It was also the biggest and longest concession in Tianjin. Although hundred years have been passed, the British Concession is still partly kept the former road structure and the space character which are becoming the windows for reviewing the history and the mixed culture between China and foreign countries of Tianjin. But in the process of the concession protecting, something happened like remedy and rebuilt without control, the appearance and the size of new buildings have no coordination with the old ones just because the lack of recognition in concession shape and space character. These all are damaging the former shape and space character. So it becomes an important problem that how to reflect old scene during the concession protection.The paper is part of the Tianjin Application Foundation and Cutting Edge Technology Research Planning——(Contract No.09 JCYBJC27000). The paper begins with transect of the urban morphology and space character, discussing the influence of western urban planning theory on Tianjin British Concession. And then take the Belt Transect, road structure, blocks, sight of roads, corner space and the node space as research contents to analyze the transect of the urban morphology and space character which and help building a management for the government to protect the British Concession.This paper has five chapters; the first chapter has made the studying target and content clear, the second chapter analyzes the start and explanation of British Concession, introducing it from city construction and population, the third and the forth chapter are the cores of the paper, they discuss the influence of western urban planning theory on Tianjin British Concession, and compare typical American city and concession in the Americas with British Concession in Tianjin. And analyze the concession morphology and space character in the belt transect and street space. At last, the fifth chapter introduces the protection current situation in recent years, and look ahead to the future of the British Concession in Tianjin.
