China has come into a critical period of urbanization. Along with the urbanization,such problems as traffic jam, environmental pollution, the decline of old urban areahave seriously hindered the sustainable development of city. In the90’s, as aintrospection and improvement, the New Urbanism was suggested to solve the citydisease. Transit oriented development (TOD) is one of the most representativeconcept of the New urbanist.As we know, there are a lot of differences between Chinese city and Western city.In this paper, through the systematic study of the city development and the trafficsystem, aimed to capture the essence and connotation of the concept, try to apply theTOD mode to the Chinese city and make it Chinanization.The thesis includes5chapters. The1st chapter summarized the background of theresearch such as the urbanization, the traffic problems and travel characteristics.The2nd and3rd chapter analyzed the related theory with the urban developmentand transportation. Research on the relationship between city morphology and publictransportation.Based on the field research the paper studied the feasibility of TOD, the surveyincludes public traffic system, the residents travel mode, the landuse near the publictransit station etc and made suggestions to improve the current situation.In the5th chapter, the paper put the TOD concept into practice use Xiamen as anexample. From three aspects, the macro, mesco and micro to elaborate how to useTOD concept in urban planning, district design and architectural design. In the last,the paper shows the difficulties and prospect of the implementation in China.
