Flood is the most serious natural disasters in China. The whole society arestriving to reduce or avoid the flood loss by engineering and non-engineeringmeasures. As an important non-engineering measure for mastering the law of floodmotion, flood propagation numerical simulation has been widely used. But with thedevelopment of visualization technology, the single numerical processing can nolonger satisfy the intuitive analysis of mass data. To meet the development trendflood propagation numerical simulation and visualization technology should becombined together. Presently, ArcGIS and professional graphic interface softwareare mostly used for visualization research of flood propagation, comparatively Map3D is used rarely. Built base on AutoCAD, Map3D not only has the professionalability of graphic treatment, but also can support GIS data perfectly with directlyaccessing and analyzing advanced GIS data which is widely used. In this paper,Map3D software has been used for building the visualization system of floodpropagation. Based on two-dimensional shallow water equations, a planetwo-dimension flood propagation mathematical model suitable for initially drylandhas been established and the numerical solution has been brought out by usingfinite-difference and alternating direction implicit method. The method ofestablishing the simulation terrain model in study area and visualizing thenumerical solution has been discussed. The secondary development of AutoCADMap3D2011has been done by using ActiveX/VBA interface programmingtechnique, a visualization system of flood propagation has been realized andapplied in practical engineering with good visual effect. Thus a seamlessintegration of flood propagation numerical calculation and visualization wasachieved.
