With intensive strength for engineering projects contracting by Chinese enterprises in overseas markets, the scale of projects is expanded continuously accompanied by more and more diversified contracting patterns. How can Chinese enterprises keep a foothold while establishing their own brands in markets abroad depends on not only the innovation of their hardware systems such as technology and equipment, etc. but also the enhancement of soft power like project management skills. Risk management, as an essential part of Engineering Project Management System, refers to the identification, analysis, assessment and then effective settlement of possible risks by means of the most effective method and the minimum capital investment so as to reduce losses arising from the risks. Therefore, reinforcement of risk management in international engineering projects is one of the basic conditions for sustainable development of Chinese enterprises in overseas markets. The thesis begins with the purpose and significance of risk management in engineering projects, and reviews the development process and research status of risk management at home and abroad. With a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental theoretical knowledge of engineering project risk and risk management, the thesis distinguishes the risk management of international engineering projects from that of ordinary projects. From case analysis, the characteristics of risk management and risk classification in international engineering projects are given and specific methods for risk management are illustrated, including risk identification, risk analysis and assessment of international engineering projects, and relevant response measures, etc.In the case study the thesis takes the Water Supply Project in Nepal as an example, paying great attention to the risk identification analysis and the impact on project implementation of international engineering projects. The author points out the three stages in risk control in accordance with construction sequence, namely advanced risk control before project commencement, risk monitoring during project implementation and risk management program Finally, in the present thesis conclusion at the same time, we also summarized the insufficiency of research and the direction of the future efforts. The author hopes the foundation of precedent researches would provide China contactors with some useful theoretical support and management for reference in the field of risk analysis, management and decision-making of potential risks in the international engineering project.
