The development of modern urban commercial architecture, as time goes by, isshowing its rapidness in the aspects of advancement and diversity. Commercial complex,as a new type of a large-scale commercial architecture, is playing an increasinglyimportant role in the development of contemporary cities. Therefore it is utterlynecessary for the construction of design theory in urban commercial complex, theresearch of space design, as well as the exploration of conformity with nationalsituations.Since the pedestrian-leading public space is not only one of the most typical formof space in commercial complex, but also the most important open space to contain thecustomer activities, the pedestrian space design for both interiors and exteriors hassignificant impact on the construction of the entire commercial complex. However, most of the large-scale commercial architectures in China are using the general simplexstructural system known as the traditional “one atrium and embracement”, which hasalready lagged behind the development of unification of commerce, relaxation andentertainment. Hence the creation of reasonable, orderly and diversiform publicpedestrian space will significant improve the spatial vitality in commercial architecture,as well as the attraction towards customers. This paper argues that the considerationmust be involved in the construction of a scientific and systematic publicpedestrian spatial system in urban commercial complex, which are the essentialresearch of creating ideal experience and favorable atmosphere for publicpedestrian space, the purpose of improving architectural qualities, spatial vitalityand commercial environment, and the design expression of exterior pedestrianspace, interior pedestrian space and environmental landscape. This paper focused on the design methodology of public pedestrian space in urbancommercial complex. First, it analyzed the developmental situation and the existingproblems in China. Secondly, it elaborated the relationship between customer activitiesand commercial space. Then illustrated some advanced theoretical works in foreigncountries and some field investigations and analysis. Finally, the paper reached theconclusion of a relatively complete design strategy and design methodology of publicpedestrian space. The entire paper is divided into four parts, six chapters. Step by step, it discussed a series of problems about development, theory, principles and strategies of publicpedestrian space in urban commercial complex.Part One:(Chapter1) Preliminary overview of the urban commercial complexand the public pedestrian space.Part Two:(Chapter2–3) Specifically addressed the composition of publicpedestrian space in urban commercial, and discriminated the connection betweencustomer activities and pedestrian space. It served as a link of former and later.Part Three:(Chapter4–5) Core part. By deeply researching into related designtheories and summarizing analytical methodologies, this part proposed the designprinciples and constructed design procedures. Then it conducted the expression ofpublic pedestrian space in commercial complex design following the principles andprocedures.Part Four:(Chapter6) Conclusion and prospection. It summarized theses thatdiscussed above, and reached the conclusion that the construction of an ecological, relaxing and highly informational spatial system for public pedestrian space is animportant design strategy for the future development of urban commercial complex inChina. In summary, the author expects that the research of this paper will provide somehelp to the development of urban commercial architecture in China. Thus to constructthe public pedestrian space more diversified, reasonable and orderly, as well as toconstruct more perfect urban and architectural spaces by improving the spatial qualitiesand expressing the core advantages.
