With the continuously accelerated urbanization and the rapid increase of the size and density of urban population, the widespread shortage of urban land resources has intensified the contradiction between the shrinking urban public space per capita and the people’s evergrowing needs for a high-quality life and public communication.A large number of commercial complexes of low utilization rate and poor accessibility have been built as a result of the blind construction rush. The exterior space of these commercial complexes contradicts their prime locations in the city as well.At the same time, the information revolution has spawned a sharing economy, and more and more people are calling for everyone to share everything. Therefore, this thesis focuses on how to create a commercial exterior space, with the attributes of urban public space, which is share with the urban space in such an increasingly crowded urban environment. This thesis launches a study on the exterior space of block-type commercial complexes based on the urban shared by selecting a lot of block-type commercial complexes in Shenzhen as research case, which is based on sort out and analyze relevant basic theories, design experience and excellent practical cases about the exterior space of block-type commercial complexes in domestic and foreign.First and foremost, four different space organization cases located in Shenzhen, namely Mixc World,Uniworld,COCO Park and OCT Harbour(East Zone)were selected as the main research objects.Theories and methods relevant to architecture and the study of behavior model, etc.were adopted in the field investigation, field measurements, statistics, induction and the like.On this foundation, the aforementioned seven elements and three utilization features of the exterior space were compared and analyzed, which lays down the basis for the summary of the employed design principles and strategies.Furthermore, three principles which should be observed in designing the exterior space of block-type commercial complexes in urban areas were summarized, namely integration, compounding and sharing. Moreover, this thesis also summed up four strategies to design exterior space forms(i.e.making the urban space interactive and continuous, integrating and optimizing the urban texture, multidimensionally connecting the urban transportation and echoing the urban culture),and three design strategies to utilize the exterior space(making the space open to the city all the time, improving the space accessibility and accommodating various urban activities). It is concluded that the exterior space of block-type commercial complexes is supposed to be included as a part of the urban public space and to undertake the two-way function as both a portion of the urban space and an architectural space,so as to render these two spaces integrated and interactive,as well as to maximize the value of the exterior space. At present,China’s research on the exterior space of the newly emerging block-type commercial complexes is still in its infancy. This thesis aims to study and compare the exterior space designs of block-type commercial complexes exemplified by different space organization cases in Shenzhen, and the author hopes that it will have certain reference significance for the later research on the exterior space of block-type commercial complexes in China.
