Traditional Chinese architecture uses varieties of building materials according tothe characteristics of them. Raw soil, wood, stone, brick and tile is widely used inChinese traditional architecture, and their characteristics obtained fully play. With thedevelopment of material technology, a large number of new materials appear andgradually replace the traditional materials. Raw soil, wood, stone, brick and tile ect.traditional materials gradually withdraw from the sight of us. This paper studies on rawsoil, wood and stone, and focuses on the material expression to analysises theirs uses incontemporary architecture.Material expression is the spiritual experience after people seeing the materials,and the material expression in this paper contains two aspects: the visual elements ofcolor, texture and texture of materials determined by the objective properties of thematerial, in this paper we call it for "natural expression" of the material; the color,texture, texture and other visual elements of construction technology and approachused in building materials and the historical memory of the material and emotionalexperience, subjective feelings, the two we co-called "human expression " of thematerial.By exploing and summarying the natural expression and the human expression ofthe raw soil, wood and stone, and by analysising their uses in contemporaryarchitecture, I want to find the wealth of expressive of the raw soil, wood and stone,arouse the concern of the architects and promote their uses in the future. In pursuit oflow-carbon and environmental protection today, it is meaningful to promote the use ofraw soil, wood and stone. Because of their low energy consumption to product and thefeature of returning to nature after their removal, raw soil, wood and stone areenvironmentally friendly materials. The use of raw soil, wood and stone is in line of the regional architectural characteristics.This paper has four parts to study raw soil, wood and stone.Firstly, I analysis and summary the natural expression of the raw soil, wood andstone by studying their objective attributes.Secondly, within the research of world-wide, historical applications of raw soil,wood and stone, which briefly summarizes the characteristics of traditional housesworldwide have distinctive architectural features of the region of raw soil, wood andstone materials, with the architectural form, focusing summarized raw soil, wood andstone materials in China’s traditional architectural features. On this basis, raw soilwood, stone materials taken from the history of human construction technology andapproach to dealing with the formation of the color and texture and other visualelements, and people’s historical memory of the material and emotional experience,subjective feelings of both sides explore summarize the humanities face of the raw soil,wood, stone materials.Thirdly, Humanistic expressions of the materials will be developed under theinfluence of culture and philosophy of contemporary architecture. The expression ofthe raw soil, wood and stone have a new expression in contemporary architecture. Inthe paper I select regional expression, cultural inheritance and epidermal performanceto analysis the expression of raw soil, wood and stone under the influence ofarchitecture concept. And I select technological innovation, new technology and newprocess to analysis the expression of raw soil, wood and stone under the influence ofarchitecture technology.Fourthly, the paper outlooked the raw soil, wood and stone in the future use ofarchitectural practice in three aspects: principles of technical, principles of art andprinciple of ideological and policy. I hope it is helpful for the architects to use the rawsoil, wood and stone in the future.The study find that the raw soil, wood and stone, which bear the construction ofthousands of years of human history, have a strong promotional value in today’sarchitecture and practice. It is certainly that the raw soil, wood and stone will bewidely used.
