| Yunnan, lies on the southwest border of China, is a mysterious and rich city characterized by special environment and history, diverse natural conditions, complex ethnic composition and multi-culture. Thousands of years have seen the hard-working and intelligent local people of different ethnic groups creating abundant residential types and brilliant culture of the residential areas.The legend of residence here is written by the native materials which is common and diverse in Yunnan and the traditional skills which is locally suited. Native materials, as a part of abundant natural resources in Yunnan, distribute everywhere and are skillfully used in building local residence:immature soil is extensively used to retain structure, timber to cover load-bearing structure, stone to rule the construction foundation, bamboo and grass are added to increase the elegance and wild fun of these residences. In the traditional residence, native materials not only mixed together and match each other, but also have different stressing points. The especially characterized local residential constructions, built by carpenters and common people from different local nations under the local natural conditions by taking suitable measures and combining with their traditional cultures and customs, accelerate the form of many diverse and original ideas on native materials and also the ways of using them. Because how to select materials and how to use it skillfully bear and even accumulate all the precious wisdom and abundant experience of common people from all nations.This paper, taking raw materials of traditional houses in Yunnan as researching object, explores and concludes the technical and cultural characteristics of native materials from the perspective of materials, as well as their specific applications and typical examples and then sum them up systematically. This thesis can be used as reference in the protection and reconstruction of traditional vernacular architecture today and the transmission of new residential areas in the traditional skills. |
