Project schedule management is the most important part in the management of the power transmission project. The project progress has a direct impact on the cost and quality and these two factors have restricted the project progress. Currently the methods which are frequently used in the management of the power transmission project are Gantt chart, CPM, PERT, S curve and the method of earned value analysis. Through these methods, we can eliminate the influence of the uncertain factors in the power transmission project and achieve the purpose of schedule management. However, we often experience that the duration program is too long or the project safety time is lost when the common methods of schedule management are used in the power transmission project. The reasons of the problems are the uncertainty in the project, the pressure team members from the management, the impact of "student syndrome" and "Parkinson's" law, so on. In addition, the traditional CPM / PERT technique has its obvious shortcomings during the control progress such as long duration estimation, little transmission information, difficulty of control, too much emphasis on technology, insufficient consideration of human factors and so on.Therefore, this paper introduces the critical chain project management to optimize the schedule management based on the in-depth analysis of the power transmission project management methods. The critical chain project management starts from the overall project, makes full use of project labor, material and financial resources. It not only considers the precedence constraints between the project activities, but also takes the resource constraints between activities into account and eliminates the impact of uncertainty on the project by the setting and management of the buffer. This paper constructs the model of the critical chain project management, bases on the CPM / PERT, introduces new methods to better the estimates of activity time and the calculation of security time and make the empirical analysis taking 220kV power transmission project as an example. This study combine the development of schedule management theory with the power transmission project. So this paper can provide reference for the same types of projects and has important significance in the theory and practice.
