Acquisition and wireless transmission of water management information are the keytechnology to achieve the automatic management in irrigation area. Because irrigation areawater information is complex, and image data contains wealth of intuitive information, sousing image acquisition and wireless transmission is an effective way to implement the"remote monitoring" in irrigation area. It can achieve irrigation area automated managementin irrigation area through acquisition and wireless transmit of traditional water managementprocess(e.g:channel water level, slide gate status. etc.).Sentinel surveillance and cable transmission are the basic running ways of traditionalimage monitoring systems. This monitor way characterized by large initial investment, nomobility, limited by physical wiring and poor scalability, so it is not suited to multi-point anddistributed large scale irrigation area. With the rapid development of GPRS wirelesscommunication technology, it is a good solution to deal with the above problem throughembedded technology, digital image processing technology,GPRS wireless transmissiontechnology and E-Mail service. Image acquisition and wireless transmission terminal basedon ARM will have broad prospects in irrigation district remote monitoring area for itsadvantage of low investment, easy installation, scalable and low maintenance cost.This paper developed the image acquisition and wireless transmission terminal based onARM, which contains image acquisition unit, GPRS wireless communication unit and E-Mailclient unit.This terminal includes ARM9embedded microprocessor S3C2440,CMOS cameraand GPRS wireless communication module, it collects images of irrigation water managementprocess and transmits it through wireless network.Embedded ARM microprocessor S3C2440control the M20GPRS module sending multimedia messages and E-Mail through ATcommands which are sent by serial port. Mobile phone user can read the multimediamessages after receive them;Mail client running on the monitor center can fetch,analyze thereached E-Mail and extract image attachments.This paper introduces the Multimedia Message Service of GPRS wirelesscommunication technology, POP3protocol of E-Mail server and the hardware circuit designof S3C2440ARM processor, CMOS camera and M20wireless communication module. This paper also completed a program about acquisition and wireless transmission terminal imagedata acquisition and wireless transmission process. Using Visual Stidio2010, it completed aprogram about the E-mail client which can read E-mail and extract image attachmentsautomatically.The experiments show that: using multimedia message based on GPRS wirelesstransmission technology in multi-point and distribute irrigate area, it can meet the variousrequirements of remote irrigation area water management monitoring system, and solvevarious problems exist in the irrigation area water management remote monitoring system.
