With the development of society and economy, people are demanding higher standard of living environment, and thus pay more attention to environmental monitoring issues. Wireless Sensor Networks has received significant progress and has been adopted in a wide range of applications in recent years. It is less time-consuming and more convenient to apply WSNs to environmental monitoring. A great many tiny cheap sensor nodes are placed to acquire environmental data, forming a multi-hop wireless network.In this paper, a design scheme of WSNs sensor node for environmental monitoring is proposed. The scheme is aimed to monitor and acquire environmental information including temperature, humidity and luminance, etc. The scheme features a dual-radio technique, in which ZigBee technology is taken advantage of for low distance communication and GPRS for long distance communication. Based on the scheme design concepts and analysis on both hardware and software requirements, LM2455-EM is used as ZigBee module, EM310 as GRRS module, MG2455-F48 as primary microprocessor and SHT11, TSL2561 as temperature/humidity and luminance sensor respectively. Hardware platform is then set up as schematic layout and PCB are further designed according to the specification of each selected chip. The hardware platform consists of two boards connected by a 20-pin connector. Gateway module and sensors are on one board while a SoC chip containing microprocessor and wireless transceiver on the other. Running on the platform is software design which realizes the functionalities of environmental information acquisition including temperature, humidity and luminance data. These data is displayed on PC through a terminal debugger.
