Controller Area Network is one of the most important field buses, a kind of serial communication network that effectively supports the distributed control system.CAN is a distributed control field bus developed by a Germany company called Bosch in 1980s, looking forward to solving the problem of the data communication between control system and test instruments in automobile industry. CAN gradually draws the attention of the application markets for its high-performance, high-reliability and unique design. At present, it has been widely used in the field of automobile industy, medical equipment, industrial automation and security.Firstly, this paper starts from the background of CAN, and then briefly introduces its features and the current market-applied situation, comes up with the defination of IP core and its tendency at home and abroad. Taking the need of CAN and the application prospects of IP core, resrearch direction is putting forward in this paper.Secondly, it introduces the technical specification of CAN 2.0 A, the SOPC technology as well as the certain definition of AVALON bus and its development. Among these, this paper emphasizes on the packet transmission types of CAN 2.0 and slave port transmission of AVALON bus.Thirdly, this paper elaborates the speciality, inside function of CAN controlled chip and the functional characteristics of peripheral circuit related chip. It focuses on the VHDL design process of IP core, especially on the internal design, timing analysis and packaging process of the CAN bus controller interface IP core in different working patterns. Finally, the achieved IP core for the CAN controller MCP2515 is tested.
