With the rapid development of computer networks and information technology, there are a large number of heterogeneous databases based on different operating system platforms and database management systems in the library of Suzhou University. Novelty retrieval workers use these databases frequently to finish their job. In order to make more effective use of these database resources, resolving the problems of heterogeneous database integration and"one-step"query are urgent issues. The main purpose of heterogeneous database integration is to mask the underlying differences between heterogeneous data sources, and to achieve information sharing between different data sources, so that novelty retrieval workers can have transparent and flexible view and access to these heterogeneous databases.This paper studies the theory and technology of heterogeneous data integration such as the data integration, XML and Web Services. Then an Assistant Sci-tech Novelty Retrieval System based on middleware has been designed to realize the idea of heterogeneous data integration. This system uses XML to establish the public data model. XML is the data exchange format. With the help of Web Services technology, which masks the underlying differences between heterogeneous data sources, a global integration environment can be built in the middleware. It shields the platform of heterogeneous data sources, system environment, the internal data structure and other aspects of heterogeneity, enabling the data integration query in multiple heterogeneous data sources. This paper designs and describes the overall system structure and the function of each module. It also details the research and design of the key technologies such as the system model integration management and wrapper. Then design and implement the Assistant Sci-tech Novelty Retrieval System based on middleware by application of the above system structure. Moreover, we also design the method of global query, result integration and filtering process system. In the test of system prototype, the system integrates several commonly used novelty databases, provides the global query interface for the novelties in the client, leading to the basic realization of the"one-step"query.
