Laser ranging technology is one kind of technology that developed with the emergence of the laser technique. Due to its good characteristic in monochromaticity, coherence and orientation, it has merits such as good performance and easy to use. It has been widely used in various areas like geodetic surveying, topographic surveying, aerial photography measurements, observations of artificial earth satellites and lunar space optical position measurement. At present, various types of range finder continuously developed toward the direction of automation, digital, small light weight and high precision. The research on the laser range finder will not only improve the existing ranging technology, but also has a great significance in enhancing the overall competitiveness of our ranging industry.In this paper, on the basis of traditional range finder, one kind of pulsed range finder system is designed through the TDC-GP2.The system include launch module, receive module, control module, high precision time interval measurement module and so on.The experiment were carried out with the method of calibration.The main contents researched in this paper are as follows:(1) Through the research, the types and the methods of the laser range finder were analyzed, the performance of the range finder both in domestic and abroad are contrasted and analyzed.(2) With the basic concept of range finder, the blind zone and the accuracy were analyzed. The blind zone is the area that can not measured. The counter can work only when the close time exceed the open time, or it will lead to the blind zone. So, increasing the counter's frequency, choosing the time interval measurement module in good performance can make a great help in decreasing the blind zone and increasing the accuracy.(3) The ranging system is build through choosing the appropriate components. With the core of TDC-GP2, the launch module, receive module, control module and the time interval measurement module is build respectively. Every module is tested through the telescope TDS1002, and the system can run successfully.(4) The experiment is carried out through the range calibration column. The wave analyze is carried out on launch module and receive module, the result of the experiment is well recorded and the experiment values were compared with the calibration values. The system can meet the basic request of ranging through the analyzing both in relative error and the degree of matching.
