Comparative Study On Language Used In The News Headlines In Newspaper Of Guangzhou And Hong Kong

To promote better mutual understandings, exchange and development, and to push forward the mutual study and reference of news headlines in newspaper of Guangzhou and Hong Kong, this Article undertakes a comparative study on language used in the news headlines in newspaper of the said areas, on the basis of language materials collected from eight mainstream Chinese newspaper issued from January of 1998 to December of 2010.The Article uses the methodology of statistics and analysis of language materials, altogether 122,900 news headlines in newspaper, undertaking a comparative study on their pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.Chapter One introduces the situation, value, content, significance and methodology of research on the language used in news headlines by linguistics society. Chapter Two is about the principle, sources and statistics of language materials collected from news headlines in newspaper of Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Chapter Three undertakes a comparative analysis on the joint features revealed by the said materials, such as the use of dialects, new vocabulary, popular and spoken language. Chapter Four undertakes an analysis on the differences of the said materials, such as that in abbreviations of numbers and titles of state leaders, and that in the use of English language. Chapter five looks into the reasons that lead to the said differences, from the aspect of linguistics, history, social science and psychology. Chapter Six draws a conclusion with some personal opinions, with an expectation to provide the benign development of newspaper industry of the said areas with some good advice and reference.The innovation of this Article lies in the overall and physical description and monographic research on the language used in news headlines in Guangzhou and Hong Kong newspaper with local characteristics.
