Cognitive Efficiency-oriented Design of Information VisualizationDesign of Information Visualization has become a vital means to conveyinformation in the era of information explosion and improve Graphical userinterface. Information Visualization conveys information and viewpoint viaschematizing, an eligible visualization design enables readers to smoothlycomplete the process of information scanning, acquiring and reading.Otherwise, it may arouse comprehension impediment, or even contradict tothe intention of information.This paper explores the personal information communication andhuman-computer interaction model, summarizes principles of humancognition, as the theoretical basis to study the Cognitive Efficiency invisualization design. The author introducing the concept of mental modelfrom Cognitive Psychology, puts forward the Bottom-up process of mentalmodel: initially, the visceral stimulus; and then the informationcomprehension logics; finally, the development of Emotional theme. Theinformation architecture follows the Top-down model, information determines the design, Design of Information Visualization should start withtheme, based on the purpose of the information, organizing the information inLogical structure, while considering the Visual form ofvisualization(including graphic, color), and stress on Visual Aesthetics.This paper based on the theoretical study, chooses the history ofShanghai Jiao Tong University as the main theme to undertake thevisualization design of university history, and makes comparison with theformer Tree diagram via a Cognitive Efficiency experiment. The authoradopts non-parametric test to study the respondents'cognitive reaction timethrough dimensions of structural, temporal and compound of structural andtemporal, and conclude with an experimental conclusion that the optimizationdesign of information visualization exhibits a statistically significantadvantage over Tree diagram.
