Nowadays, with the information explosion, information overload has become a universal phenomenon. At the same time, a personal music collection may comprise thousands of music files. Information Visualization can help user to gain an overview of music emotion inside so large a set and improve graphical user interface.This paper explores the cognitive processes in user-icon interactive model when facing graphical user interface, summarizes principles of human cognition and several factors in icon design affecting the cognitive efficiency, as the theorerical basis to study the Cognitive Efficiency in generating affective music icons. Afterward, I integrate this theoretics with the theory of visualization design to gain the principle and process in generating affective music icons.Based on the theoretical study, this paper describe a method to generate icons to represent the emotion expressed in music. The Pleasure-Arousal-Dominance Temperament Model was used for connecting the music with the icon. The icons consist of bloom-like shapes, whose form depend on the three PAD parameters. These icons let users easily select music according to its emotional content. These affective icons may be used to visualize the emotion of other things as well.
