Currently, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has become a hot research topic in the field of sensor both at home and abroad and it has been successfully used in military, environmental monitoring and protection, health care, intelligent home etc. Now it is difficult to monitor leakage, give a early waring, and locate the leak point. Also the system resently is not good at real-time monitoring. In order to handle these difficulties, an innovative solution based on WSN is put forward and then develops a new gas leak detection and location system used for production safety of petrochemical industry. WSN is low cost, low power, easy to deploy and its network has great coverage. With these advantages of WSN, the system solves some technical problems such as: bad real-time and hard to locate. The thesis mainly researches on software and hardware implementation of the system.Research starts with hardware design of WSN sensor node, and designs the hardware of RF module, power module and sensor module seperately. The RF module is based on ZigBee technology and chooses TI CC2430 as CPU. Considering design technologies of high frequency and low costing, the RF module is designed with Double-Sided PCB, and its anti-interference performance is remarkable. The power module is battery-powered, designed with principle of efficiency and it provides DC power to both the RF module and the sensor module by single-input and double-output. Limited to laboratory conditions, signal processing circuits for alcohol-sensor, temperature-sensor and pyroelectric infrared sensor are designed. Consider revising power consumption, cost, and precision on sensor selection.After hardware design, program on protocol stack is designed for different node types to achieve point to point communication, star topology and mesh network. Also different signal acquisition programs are designed for different sensors.Node design including software and hardware design completed after combining the power module, RF module, sensor module and corresponding program. During the research, WSN is extended to apply in Smart Home. Programs and the hardware design of the nodes are proved stable and reliable in the application. In addition, point to point communication and Mesh respectively meshed network topology are tested.This leak detection system is fundamentally different from current leak detection method in the petrochemical industry; it is an innovative application in petrochemical industry and it is ground-breaking in significance. In the design, the completion of hardware and software design of the leak detection system has laid a foundation tomb for WSN further application in the petrochemical industry.
