Higher education is deeply integrated with technology and economy in the context of global knowledge-based economy and the rapid development of science and technology. The construction of university discipline is of great significance to the building of world-class university, with the topic concentrating on economy and society. Up to now, we have not found international comparison on some specific disciplines in world universities. The gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities from several disciplines, the research performance of these disciplines, are the issues that the Chinese universities and government must face. Thus studying the development of university discipline is of academic and practical significance.International articles are main and important reflection of the development in university discipline, so bibliometric methods, which have been widely used in discipline evaluation since the 1980s, could be used to solve the problem of international comparison of world universities in discipline level.Firstly, the paper selects two bibliometric indicators - publication of articles and percentage of papers published in top 25% journals, by which we investigate the research performance of 13 disciplines for over 1200 world universities. Then the paper analyzes the development of university discipline in national level and institutional leve. The results are summarized by three aspects : the national distribution of predominant disciplines for world universities, the world-class disciplines for different countries and universities. Finally, some reveals will be made to promote the construction of university discipline in China and enlarge the field of discipline evaluation bibliometrically.
