Most of the tasks in the new design are based on former experience. The access and reuse of the knowledge and experience to the product is one of the most important attentions to attain high quality product design in a short time. The reasonable organization of the knowledge is cornerstone of knowledge access and reuse. Because of issues in the modeling such as diversity of the knowledge and representation, hugeness of the system and distinction in the application between all kinds of the professional teams, present modeling and reuse methods cannot adapt to the modern application. There are some disadvantages of these methods. First of all, particularity of each complex product development region, diversity of the knowledge and the complication of representation of the concept make plenty of challenges. Second, the reuse and browsing of the knowledge is based on the full text retrieval and the case retrieval, which lack effective intelligence.Mindful of the deficiency mentioned above, all the contents focus on the complex product designing such as airplane, vessel and vehicle. First, the knowledge structure and the organizing of the production design are discussed. Then one reasonable system of knowledge classification is posed according to the feature of the product design. On the basis of the above modeling and methods, the knowledge base of the product design for enterprises are formed, which is used in reuse service of knowledge retrieval by organizing all the concepts in product design.After that, the framework of knowledge retrieval is established. In the framework, the analysis methods of query are posed and query information model is set up. Then by using different kinds of query strategies, knowledge retrieval is improved like the following statements.1. With the relation among product design knowledge ontology, the semantic query is available.2. With the probability model of concepts, the concept inference query is available.3. With the template of design semantics, rule query is available.Last but not least, the application from airplane design knowledge shows the fact that the design of product based on ontology and queries of multi-strategy are practical and feasible. The efficiency and the ratio of reuse of product design knowledge are effectively improved.
