Software testing plays a significant role to assure the reliability and quality of software in software developing process. With the continuous higher requirement from the development of software industry, software testing has become more and more important in software development and maintenance. They are expected to find all types of the software bugs even earlier and more frequently at each stage of software life cycle. They are expected to cover all the functionalities, to be the final guard line before releasing to customers. If only depending on manual testing, the software development team will have to invest more time and human resources. Meanwhile, the automation testing nowadays is mainly based on Record/Replay, which brings big challenges on the test script maintenance. Therefore, it is important and meaningful to research on automation testing.The appearance of test automation framework indicates that the technology of software automation testing is going to be mature. Automation testing will become more economical and efficient, and be more advantageous to be developed and maintained. More time can be used to increase the coverage and improve the quality of software product along with the decrease of the time expended on development and script maintenance, thereby, investment on automation can be paid back faster.This paper will firstly analysis the importance of software testing and automation testing in software development life cycle. Then discuss the bottleneck each company will encounter with the development of automation team. As a result, automation framework will be introduced. Regarding QTP automation framework, firstly analysis the characteristics of QTP, then base on automation framework describe in detail about design, architecture and implements of SAFFRON.
