With the rapid development of the Internet and streaming media technologies, the applications of real-time multimedia, such as IP video conference, online video, and long-distance education, are more and more prevalent, thus IPTV service emerges. As more effort is put into the"Triple Play"process in China, IPTV will no doubt become one of the most important businesses in Next Generation Network (NGN).Guarantee of good service quality must be made to make the IPTV deploy in the large scale. From the perspective of consumers, the user's QoE (Quality of Experience) must be considered by IPTV providers. It is necessary for IPTV providers to improve the users' QoE by not only delivering the IPTV data efficiently, but also monitoring and troubleshooting networks carrying diverse streaming media types. This thesis has made research on monitoring the quality of data transmission in IPTV. The contributions of our work are summaried as follows:(1) The MDI (media delivery index) is analyzed in this paper, and in order to overcome its drawback, a new video delivery index VBR(Virtual Buffer Rate) is proposed. To overcome the drawback of currently used methods to monitor the quality of IPTV video transmission, a new model for monitoring the quality of video data transmission in IPTV is proposed. Based on the model, we proposed an algorithm to compress the monitoring information for reducing bandwidth in transmitting monitor information.(2) According to the model for monitoring the quality of video data transmission in IPTV proposed in the thesis, we proposed a novel design to monitor the transmission and implement a system software called SpeedGuard.(3) We run SpeedGuard in several different application environments in QuickView, which is an IPTV testbed for our research team. We show that our model is efficient in monitoring traffic and SpeedGuard is very effective.In a word, this thesis proposed an efficient model for monitoring video quality in IPTV and implemented a software called SpeedGuard. We believe that our research is very helpful on controlling fast transmission of the large-scale streaming media traffic.
