The streaming media is the application developing the fastest of the Internet,especially with establishment of the "tri-networks integration" strategy, streaming mediadistribution will gradually change from the service with no QoS guarantee provided bythe Internet to video services with QoS guarantee provided by the Internet and telecomoperators, even not for free, therefore the QoE (Quality of Experience) for user’swatching streaming media video could be significantly improved.Monitoring of network transmission quality for streaming media is the basis ofproviding business-class video service. Monitoring the transmission quality ofstreaming video is usually accomplished by monitoring and analyzing the MDI (MediaDelivery Index) for video streaming via equiping professional instruments in thenetwork. With the improving processing capability of the router, deployment ofcustomized third party application in the router becomes possible. For this purpose, avideo transmission quality monitoring method with participation of router is developedin this paper, and the key monitoring algorithm is studied. The main work andinnovation points are as following:(1) the streaming video quality monitoring method with participation of router isdeveloped, the implementation method and packet processing flow for analyzing thestreaming media video transmission quality on router are analyzed in detail, anddesigned of a streaming media transmission quality monitoring framework,RASMF(Router Assisted Streaming Monitoring Framework), is presented.(2) According to the demands for video quality monitoring with routerparticipation, a new streaming media transmission quality monitoring algorithm, MFM(Message Flow Monitoring), is established. Idea of MFM algorithm, MFM algorithmand MFM algorithm for hardware implementation is detailed.(3) MFM algorithm uses the token bucket concept, and it is turned out throughanalyzing and monitoring the transmission quality of a set of video message flow that,compared with the existing MDI and TBM algorithm, MFM algorithm has lowcomputational complexity, and is suitable for hardware implementation.A small-scalestream media distribution environment is established within the laboratory, the MFMalgorithm is accomplished based on NetMagic programmable experiment platform. Inreal network environment, streaming media transmission quality is evaluated, thevalidity of the streaming media transmission quality monitoring framework with routerparticipation, RASMF, is verified, and MFM characteristics of the algorithm andaccuracy. With the rapid development of streaming media application, especially in the trendof "tri-networks integration", the video transmission quality monitoring model andmonitoring algorithm with router participation will provide important reference andexperience to accomplishment of monitoring streaming media video transmissionquality.
