With the further development of the computer and network technology, networkbandwidth is continuously expanding, with the network multi-media platform becomingmore and more perfect, the application of stream media gets more pervasive and moreconcentration has been casted to its development. At the mean while the demand thatpeople expected on multi-media service increases day by day, which incurs a dramaticgrowth in the amount of service injected into network media. However, the digitalcompression and Internet network which multi-media transmission relies on still getlittle change and performance improvement, making a great challenge to the existingQoS of streaming-media transmitting (SMT).The QoS of SMT is an essential indicatorin the streaming-media system. Which plays an important role in the degree of client s’satisfaction. The method to build perfect monitoring environment of transmitting qualitywhich ensures the QoS of SMT has become a hot issue among researches operated byacademics and industries. This article performs an inquiry on the above issue. The mainwork and innovations include:(1) summary and overview of the factors that affect the quality of streaming-mediatransmitting, and the analysis and researches for the monitoring methods, algorithms,indicators of current QoS of SMT, verification and comparison about assessmentmethods of PEVQ and MOS_V, the RLI and LDA algorithm, and the MDI and VBRindicators.(2) By establishing probability model solely for the amount of packets arrived, thepacket length, and the packet flow according to the characteristics of the packets ofstreaming-media transmitted through the network, we perform analysis and research onpacket characteristics, which providing theoretical support for our innovative indicators.(3) We propose a novel monitoring indicator called VTD(Video TimestampDithering)with the consideration of the current method, indicator and the advantage anddisadvantage of algorithms of monitoring the QoS of SMT, together with the computingand analysis of the streaming-media packet transmitting. Later we make a comparisonof the new indicator with RTL algorithm and MDI indicator through experimentverification.at last we summarize the merit of VTD indicator.(4) We design and implement a monitoring system for the QoS of SMT—themicro dynamical monitoring system based on VTD indicator and NetMagic device. Thesystem can be divided into two parts, including hardware design and software design.we implement packet forwarding, Summary packet extraction and time stampcomputing of adjacent packets in hardware, the configuration management of NetMagicdevice, the analysis and process of summary packets together with the computing andshowing of VTD and MLR monitoring indicators can be implemented in software. In summary,this article proposes a highly-effective monitoring indicator to dealwith the monitoring problem of QoS of SMT and implements a set of monitoringsystem for the QoS of SMT, the results of our research may have important theoreticalmeaning and practical value on high speed transmitting of large-scale streaming media.
