Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) is a combination of sensor monitoring technique and network communication technique, in charge of working status inspection and health detection and alarm via filed data, providing a solid safeguard for the well-balanced operation of the bridge as well as the security of people's life and property. BHMS is a high real-time system, transfers large amount of data in long distance, and due to the constrains of the geographical and the environmental conditions, the content and the requirement of every system differs from each other. Therefore, most of the deployed BHMSs are built with different ways, lacking of a well-adapted integrated solution. To systematically study BHMS solution not only provides the potential integrated solution to practical application, but also contributes to the research of intellectualized bridge system construction in future. This thesis investigates a number of research results on BHMS, does a well study on system design, and proposes basic designing principles for it. Based on that, four major subsystems that constructed the whole system are carefully analyzed in devise or implement, respectively. First, we layer out the data gathering part, and discuss the problem of sensor selection. Second, the key problems in communication part such as data transferring manner and protocol selection are deeply investigated. Third, we analyze how to choose platform and technique for database development, and provide examples of implement. Last, aiming at the general management part, we propose the function design goals and the concrete designing methods. The content in this thesis involves most of important sides in designing BHMS, thus possesses strong utility value for practical use. It could be also served as references to those monitoring systems that built in complicated environment.
